Genius, fashion arbiter, God’s gift to women the world over (From Hollywood to the Louvre), these are just a few names given to the now departed designer mogul Yves Saint Laurent who died just last Sunday in Paris at the age of 71.

Mostly famous for his contribution to the world of fashion, Yves Saint Laurent was the first to introduce affordable yet highly fashionable clothes for women. This, of course, gained him much global recognition over the years, placing him in an elite club where the names of Christian Doir, and Coco Chanel helped to catapult Paris into becoming the fashion capital of the world up to this day.

Success came early for Laurent, at just 21 he made his debut appearance in the fashion industry and by 1989 had transformed his name into an empire of clothes, perfumes, and accessories.

Many famous and highly prestigious names have had the privilege to don his designs throughout generations. These names include Princess Grace of Monaco, Catherine Deneuve , and of course the everyday woman who benefited greatly from his exquisite and affordable collections.

Yet life wasn’t all wrought with success for the fashion designer. Depression and alcohol abuse plagued Laurent’s life as he reportedly also became “increasingly withdrawn later in life.”

Laurent died of a brain tumor as said by his longtime partner Pierre Berge. He had been diagnosed of it for a year until his death last Sunday June 1, 2008. The fashion world as well as his closest friends mourned his passing. The daily Le Figaro honored him by committing a whole to his memory and accomplishments. President Nicolas Sarkozy shared a few words of praise and called the Late Laurent “a creative genius.” “He was convinced that beauty was a luxury that every man and woman needed.” Also the president cared to comment: “My heart wrenches when I think of Mr Saint Laurent. He was an artist and an exceptional human being.”
