Shopping Tips for Furniture for the Children's Room

At any one point along the cycle, however, there are two constants that you should keep in mind when buying children’s room furniture; safety and durability. The last thing in the world any parent wants is injury and using the furniture again is critical to any pocket books.

Functionality at both ends of the cycle

Oddly, a child’s room is really only truly efficient at the two opposite ends of its use. At the beginning when the child needs to be changed and left to sleep safely and at the end when the child is studying to leave or returning during school breaks or after. At these two points you have a certain amount of control over the furniture that goes into the room. While shopping at the birth end, suggest or just ask for as many gift cards as you possibly can. If there is a mother/mother-in-law involved, keep a tight rein but if they want to spend money let them. Sanity comes in many forms and can be found in many ways if they see their money at work. At the opposite end of the cycle, buy for yourself as much as for the child in the room. A good solid desk set-up will work good for their study habits and make for a good home office when they are gone. Just make sure that it's big enough and heavy enough not to travel with them.

Just plain safety

Before you head out the door to do some shopping sit down and visit CPA.gov for a current listing of all recalled toys and children's furniture. It should list any items that fold all of a sudden, have easily broken and swallowed parts or are just plain dangerous. As you shop, look for: sharp corners or edges, places where fingers of any size (newborn to teen) can get caught. Look for spaces where heads can get caught or mouths can get covered. Check labels for lead paint or test the paint. Bolts should be covered or recessed, blinds should have twist poles and not hanging cords. Also, one that many people miss is places where clothing or scarves can get caught causing a strangulation hazard.

It won't stay that color

When you shop for the nursery you have the option of any color in the rainbow for your and the baby's enjoyment. Sure any color will do for the furniture as long as it’s white, but check out the options now because once the child grows up a bit the color palate is likely to get a work out. For your first 'bigger kid' furniture purchases you may want to look for furniture that is unpainted and unprimed. The furniture is likely to go through many pint jobs so starting fresh will make the process easier and potentially a bit less expensive.

Hand it down

It might be understood that a piece of children’s furniture needs to be sturdy. Not only because it's going to take all sorts of abuse but because it should be bought with the intent of lasting through several children, yours or not. Look for harder woods, without sharp corners, that will stand up to a few beatings. Any piece of children's furniture will take a beating but showing its scars means that it made it through the child cycle and will continue to do so for whomever it ends up with next, child wise.

Look out below

One way or another, furniture in a child's room is going to get climbed on. There are just no two ways about it. Look for furniture that has a wider base on it so that it will not turn over. You'll want to combine this with the observation that they are climbing for a reason and that shelving should be installed with the intent of not pulling free from the wall.

It's yours again?

This part of buying children's room furniture is perhaps the best part of the child’s furniture cycle. It needs to be efficient for the studying aspect of the child and comfortable for you to work at as well. Since these furniture "systems" can cost a bit more make sure that your input is a large part of the purchase. Another good idea when shopping for this type of furniture is to have an idea of what you would want to put into the room when they are away at school or gone. Just plan a year or two down the road and you’ll be even happier then your child.
