Important Steps to Begin Paying Off Collection Accounts

Joe Larson

It is necessary to pull your credit report so that you can pay of collection accounts. Once a year, you can obtain a free credit report from all three credit bureaus at http://www.annualcreditreport.com. Having a copy of your credit report will enable you to see just who you owe, how much you owe them, and how to contact each one. By examining your credit report, you can be sure that there are no mistakes on it and have mistakes corrected if there are.

Sitting down and deciding on a monthly budget will be your next step. This will allow you to see the amount of money that you put towards your collection accounts each month. A well-planned budget is an excellent way to save your money; by tracking each thing you buy and each bill you pay, you will make your money go much further because you will also see where you are wasteful. But once you've set up your budget, you need to actually stick to it.

It is now the right time to call your creditors. It can be overwhelming to approach all of your debt at once, so address one creditor at a time. Inquire to see if they will take a lower amount. Most will come to a settlement with you, but will require payment within a certain time. Be sure they do not push or scare you into something you cannot afford to pay. It is pointless to commit to a payment that is out of your budget.

You can pay the entire balance you owe, or ask for a settlement amount, if you are able. Face it; the damage has already been done. Remember, however, that it can be corrected; it looks better on your credit report if you pay back the total amount owed instead of settling for a smaller amount. But the smaller the credit balances the better, with no outstanding balance at all being ideal.

Sending you to court for wage garnishment is a common practice of collection agencies. The legal process will oftentimes be avoided by agreeing to a payment schedule. It may be difficult to work out a payment arrangement because, unfortunately, many collection agencies do not want to. However, some are willing, so do make an attempt. Note: People often make the most mistakes when a plan is not in order.
